Description
Want you and your puppy to get the best start? Puppy Club is the class for you!
Our puppy classes are designed so that you can begin as soon as possible, and to be flexible enough that we can address any issues as they arise. With generous discussion time, you’ll be able to ask our trainers all the questions you need as you and your puppy get to know each other.
With an emphasis on building focus and socialisation, we lay the groundwork to make future training simple and fun.
Puppy club is open to puppies aged between 8 and 18 weeks and has a rolling intake, meaning that you can get started straight away! We disinfect our training pen before class to make it as safe as possible for your puppy. All puppies attending must be up to date for their age on vaccinations and worming, and if your puppy is unwell we ask that they stay home. Puppies must be finished by 18 weeks of age, so the oldest age for puppies starting is 13 weeks. If your puppy is 14 weeks or older, we suggest Obedience & Life Skills, Level 1
How to book: Our puppy club classes are a drop in class rather than a course, and each class is tailored to the puppies attending with plenty of time to ask questions about puppy problems. For the booking process, you buy a class package which gives you credits, you then use those credits to book into the classes you would like to attend. You don’t need to come to the same time or day every week, but we do suggest you book ahead because they fill up. If a class is full, make sure to put your name down on the waitlist. We endeavour to add extra classes when we know people are wanting them, and will notify those on the waitlist when we do.
Our aim for puppy club isn't to teach your puppy a range of obedience behaviours, we can do that at any age. Rather, we want to make sure that your puppy feels safe and secure with the world around them, and to lay the groundwork for focusing around distractions so that it's easy to train those behaviours later. The time window for appropriately socialising our puppies is small, so it's much more important to work on those things early and worry about obedience behaviours later.
We have ample discussion time to allow new puppy owners to ask lots of questions about any issues they're having at home. We want to be able to provide you with lots of support through what can be a very difficult period.
- Your Puppy. Your puppy will be staying in the car alone for a few minutes at the start and end of class. To plan for this you may want to bring your puppy's crate for them to relax in, or a white sheet to put over your car and keep it cool if it's a sunny day.
- A plain flat lead, preferably 180cm or more. No Flexi-Leads or Bungee-Leads please. Black Dog leads are available for purchase in our store.
- A flat collar or a comfortable harness.
- Approximately 200g of soft, highly palatable treats diced into small pieces (~5mm cubes on average, some dogs may require smaller or larger treats). We use and recommend Prime 100 in the flavours: Turkey & Flaxseed (suitable puppy diet), Kangaroo & Pumpkin, or Salmon & Tapioca. We recommend these as they are healthy, palatable, and easy to dice without being squishy or crumbly. Some dogs may prefer other foods though such as cooked chicken or cheese.
