Description
Our 6-week introductory course to learn the basics of effective training using positive reinforcement. Fundamental skills are developed for both dog and handler with the aid of friendly instructors, small class sizes, and written content with homework plans to take home and practice.
Our goal for this course is for dog owners to develop an understanding of basic behavioural theory, as well as to expand their mechanical handling skills through teaching some fundamental behaviours. By the final week of this course, we aim that you and your dog will be able to demonstrate the following skills:
- Walk on a loose lead for over 50 paces on a variable reinforcement schedule.
- Explain the 80% Rule and why it is so important when training a recall
- Demonstrate Leave It with food on an open palm for a full 5 seconds
- Have your dog remain in a Sit Stay while you take one step away, do a jumping jack, touch the ground, then return to your dog.

- Your dog. Your dog will be staying in the car alone for a few minutes at the start and end of class. To plan for this you may want to bring your dog's crate for them to relax in, or a white sheet to put over your car and keep it cool if it's a sunny day.
- A plain flat lead, preferably 180cm or more. No Flexi-Leads or Bungee-Leads please. Black Dog leads are available for purchase in our store.
- A flat collar or a comfortable harness.
- Approximately 200g of soft, highly palatable treats diced into small pieces (~5mm cubes on average, some dogs may require smaller or larger treats). We use and recommend Prime 100 in the flavours: Turkey & Flaxseed (suitable puppy diet), Kangaroo & Pumpkin, or Salmon & Tapioca. We recommend these as they are healthy, palatable, and easy to dice without being squishy or crumbly. Some dogs may prefer other foods though such as cooked chicken or cheese. We stock ready to use bags of diced prime 100 in our fridge for $5.
